Questions and answers

Short answers, taken from how Nisabify works and from its Privacy Policy, Terms and Support pages, which have the full detail.

Rulings and figures

Which schools of fiqh does Nisabify support?

Ḥanafī, Mālikī, Shāfiʿī and Ḥanbalī. You choose one when you set up, and you can change it in Settings. Other schools are not supported.

What does “Sourced, not scholar-reviewed” mean?

Every position Nisabify applies is recorded with its stated basis and the recognised alternative. Working defaults with no cited authority are labelled as estimates. Ruling set 2026.7, Qassim's specification version 1.1 with his correction of the Ḥanafī year and personal calculation choices, applies to new years and is not scholar reviewed. Open years keep their original ruling set. The label, and the version of the ruling set, appear next to every figure so the caveat always travels with the number.

Is a Nisabify figure a fatwa?

No. It is an estimate worked out from what you enter and the settings you choose. Nisabify does not decide whether you owe zakah, how much, or when. Consult a qualified scholar about your own situation.

Does Nisabify apply every position of my school exactly?

Not yet. In ruling set 2026.7, the Ḥanbalī setting currently deducts debts the same way as the Ḥanafī one; all four schools use due-now debts plus additional instalments in the zakah year. You can choose a personal debt method in Settings for your next zakah year. These draft defaults await review. On the website, the Methodology page shows the basis and alternatives for each position. Check the working against your own school before you rely on a figure.

Why does Nisabify ask gold or silver separately?

The nisab can be set by the value of 85 g of gold or 595 g of silver, and the two are about ten times apart. That can decide whether you owe anything at all, so Nisabify asks it as its own question, with your school’s usual position selected to start. Which to use is a question for a scholar; Nisabify does not decide it for you.

How does Nisabify count my zakah year?

A lunar year ends on its Hijri anniversary, counted on the Umm al-Qurā calendar, which Nisabify keeps as a fixed table so a device update cannot move your due date. You can choose a solar year of 365 days instead, at 2.5772% rather than 2.5%.

Where do the gold and silver prices come from?

Daily reference prices come from metals.dev by default. Nisabify keeps the first accepted gold and silver reading for each UTC day. Settings shows the date and source; if today's reading has not arrived, the older date stays visible. You can choose your own prices instead, and those stay as you entered them until you change them.

Your account and data

Why is Nisabify for adults 18 and over only?

Nisabify is a personal-finance tool for adults. The website requires you to confirm "I am 18 or over" and records the time and policy wording version. The website saves a date of birth only when you have a retirement account and choose to work out penalty-free withdrawals from your date of birth. Current iPhone and Android builds still check adulthood using a date of birth and save it only when their wording explicitly says so. Anyone under 18 cannot continue.

How do I sign in?

With an email address and a password, with Google, or with Sign in with Apple, on the website and in the apps. Nisabify always needs an account, because it keeps your record for you.

What does Nisabify store about me?

Your sign-in details and email address; what you enter (accounts, balances, assets, debts and gifts); your settings and zakah years; your school of fiqh, stored only after you agree; each calculation Nisabify saves; and the record that you confirmed you are 18 or over. If you agree to Money, it also stores transaction dates, amounts, merchant names and categories, your category corrections, notes, merchant rules and budgets, and net-worth records. It is kept on Nisabify’s servers in the United States.

It is not end-to-end encrypted: Nisabify can read what you store, including the names of the recipients you record gifts to. Your adult confirmation, its time and policy wording version are saved in your account. A date of birth supplied for retirement valuation is saved with them. You can correct it in Settings. It is deleted with your account and is not shared with any provider. Nisabify does not collect your location, contacts, bank logins or advertising identifiers. The Privacy Policy has the full list.

Is my data sold or used for ads?

No. Nisabify has no ads, analytics or tracking, and does not sell your personal information or share it for advertising.

How do I delete my account?

While signed in, go to Settings → Your account → Delete account, on the website or in either app. Deletion cannot be undone. If you cannot sign in, email info@mizanfintech.app with the subject “Delete my account”. Step by step: Delete your account.

Can I take my records with me?

Yes. Export CSV in Records saves your giving record, in the apps and on the website. On the website you can also print a summary.

Money and giving

Does Nisabify handle my money?

No. Nisabify does not hold or receive your money and takes no share of any gift. A gift to a charity is made on the charity’s own website or through Every.org. A gift to a masjid that has a page on Nisabify is paid through Stripe straight into the masjid’s own Stripe account. Recording a gift yourself only updates your own record.

Does giving to a listed charity count as zakah?

Nisabify does not say. The charities it lists are US organizations whose tax-exempt status was checked against IRS records on the date shown. That confirms tax-exempt status and nothing more; it is not an endorsement, and whether a gift discharges your zakah is a question for a scholar.

Can I connect my bank account?

Yes, with Plus (up to five institutions) or Premium (no fixed limit). Nisabify connects bank, card, loan, investment and retirement accounts through Plaid. On Basic you enter your balances yourself.

For a real connection, you sign in on a page run by Plaid and Nisabify reads your balances, the holdings in your investment accounts, and your debts. The connection includes permission for your transactions. Nisabify reads transactions in US dollars only after you agree to Money, which is part of Premium. It categorises transactions automatically using Plaid categories and your merchant rules; you can correct categories, add notes and mark a gift as zakah. A mark does not record a zakah payment or reduce what is due. It is read-only: Nisabify never moves money, and you can disconnect at any time. Disconnecting stops new reads; on the website it also removes that institution’s imported transactions and balance history. In the apps, transactions already read and their category corrections and notes stay for up to 25 months from their dates, budgets for 13 calendar months, counted from their budget month, and net-worth records for 25 months. Transactions, their corrections and notes, and net-worth records stay for up to 13 months if you have not accepted the updated Money terms. Merchant rules stay until you remove them or delete your account. Deleting your Nisabify account disconnects everything and erases its Money data. Money reports use stored transactions and values; daily net-worth records use the latest stored values, which may be out of date.

Can I use Nisabify for my taxes?

Nisabify’s giving record is a record of what you told it you gave, for you and your tax preparer. It is not a receipt and not tax advice. Keep the receipt each charity sends you: that is what supports a deduction.

Will Nisabify remind me when zakah is due?

Yes. Nisabify can email you before your zakah is due and on the day, and tell you when a connected account needs reconnecting. The iPhone and Android apps can also send a notification. You choose which reminders you get in Settings.

Apps and pricing

Is there an iPhone or Android app?

Both are in beta testing and not yet in the App Store or on Google Play. The website works today in an up-to-date browser on a computer or a phone.

Is Nisabify free?

Working out your zakah is free on the Basic plan. Plus is $6.99 a month or $59.99 a year, with up to five connected institutions, automatic zakah year tracking and 50 questions a month. Premium is $7.99 a month or $69.99 a year, adding unlimited connected institutions, Money, round-ups and 200 questions a month. Until February 1, 2027, your first plan is 30% off for its first year. Plans are bought on the website and renew until you cancel; see the Terms. For questions about plans, email Nisabify.

Can I use Nisabify outside the United States?

Nisabify is built for people in the United States: amounts are in US dollars and the listed charities are US organizations.

Email info@mizanfintech.app, and say whether you use the website, the iPhone and iPad app or the Android app. Never send a password, bank login or account number. More on the Support page.
